Competition, endogeneity and the winning bid: An empirical analysis of eBay auctions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Using a dataset of Texas Instruments (TI) calculator auctions on eBay, we estimate the impact of the number of bidders on the winning bid. We highlight the possible endogeneity associated with using the number of observed bidders. We tackle this problem by employing approaches involving instrumental variables. We introduce a novel instrumental variable, the closing interval between successive auctions. Estimates from the two-stage least squares (2SLS) regression are over three times those from an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression. 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

However, in many online auctions, a number of substitutable goods are auctioned concurrently and bidders can bid on several auctions at the same time. Recent theoretical research shows how bidders can gain from the existence of competing ...

That is, a bidder can submit his reservation price (called a proxy bid) early in the auction and have the r...

To be the lowest bidders in procurement auctions, contractors commonly solicit subcontract bids at the bid preparation stage. A remarkable feature of the subcontract competition is that “winning is not everything”; the lowest subcontractor gets a job conditional on his contractor’s successful bid. This paper makes the first attempt to establish a model for such pre-award subcontract competition...
